What is released in a Craniosacral Therapy session?

All body focused therapies release something but, what is it? Is it tension? Well, yes, but when it comes to Craniosacral Therapy it is much more than that. Let me explain what I am talking about.

Throughout your entire body you have a connective tissue called fascia. When I say the entire body I literally mean every single bit of the body has fascia running through it. When you were a fetus growing in your mothers womb your first few cells of life were covered and held together in fascia.
As your cells divided they continued to be surrounded by and supported by their fascial covering. As you formed complex systems each one of them was held together and kept separate from one another by fascia. You literally grew into your fascia which is how it came to run through every single piece of you.
Until recently fascia was considered to be just a tissue with no other purpose other than holding you together and allowing you to move. But now we know that fascia is an extension of the brain. It is our brains connection (along with the nervous system) to every single bit of our being.
Couple that with the brain that is your heart and the brain that is your intestines and you have a very complex system of awareness and communication running throughout your entire body. Your body as a whole is talking to itself all of the time and the input is coming from every single cell in your body which is conscious and aware.
Each cell has to be conscious and aware. If they were not conscious then you would not be conscious. You are a collection of 10 trillion cellular consciousnesses. How amazing is that?
With this in mind it is easier to see how a soft light touch therapy that listens to the body can be deeply healing. We have been taught to believe that we are our thinking minds and that our bodies are a machine to carry our brains around but as you can see this could not be farther from the truth.
Your body has access to infinite intelligence though its connection to the field around it. The depth of understanding it has about itself and the world around you compared to your brain is like comparing a library to a book.
Now, going back to the question of what is released. Well, if the tissue in the body is in the condition it is in because it is holding on to something then what could that something be? Trauma? Moments in your life? Fear? Apprehensions? Anxiety? Yes, yes, yes and so much more.
Often clients have thoughts or memories on the table that are related to the holding pattern which gives them even deeper insight into what they are holding onto. Through the shifts that occur they also notice that they respond to the world differently after craniosacral therapy.
I invite you to spend some time engaging with your body’s depth through a craniosacral therapy session. To learn more about Craniosacral Therapy go here.
