What is Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork?
Most people know what massage is, but what is bodywork? You can think of it as the bridge between massage therapy and physical therapy. Bodywork centers around targeted work that gets to the root of your pain and dysfunction with techniques applied to very specific areas aimed at resolving the issue.
Depending of what is needed sessions can be a blend of therapeutic massage techniques (think deep tissue) and bodywork or strictly bodywork. Sessions begin with an assessment of your body which may include postural assessments, movement assessments and/or muscle testing. The techniques that are drawn upon are myofascial release, neuromuscular therapy, trigger point therapy, myofascial scraping, cupping and neurological pattern retraining (movement). The pressure applied will never be “too much” and I will check in with you constantly to make sure you are as comfortable as you can be during the more intense moments. As the tension releases and the patterns unwind you will begin to feel a calming of the nervous system that you may not have felt in years. This is because when you get real relief through deep releases the alarms in the system begin to turn off and the holding that you were doing begins to let go. Though there may be some discomfort involved in achieving this goal, you will find that you leave the session feeling more relaxed and free-er than you ever felt from a “regular massage” therapy session.

Before each session we will discuss what needs to be addressed. Once we have established what we are going to work on I will take you through some assessments to gather information on what may be causing the issue. After that I will have you lay on the table and the session will begin. As tissues are released I may ask you to get up and see how you feel and perform some more assessments. The session will be an evolution of discovery and treatment with the purpose of resolving the issues we discussed.
Things to consider
There are a couple of contraindications to getting therapeutic massage and bodywork so it is important to make sure you are thorough when filling out the health history on the intake form. More often the therapy will need to be modified rather than avoided. If you have any concerns please reach out and let's talk about it.
